Sachin, what makes him different

| April 24, 2010 | 2 Comments

By the time you read this Sachin will be 37 years old already. But the passion with which he plays cricket is extraordinary. It seems as if he is still in his early twenties with a lot of hunger for runs and some experience under his belt. I, as a kid, started watching cricket when he arrived to the scene. Always used to pray “Play cautiously Sachin, you are the only one” however i was a fool to pray, he just needed no blessings!!

Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli and Praveen Amre came together at the same time making headlines in the cricketing news. Sachin was considered the worst of the lot but his dedication and love for the game made him the best. Well, when you play for 20 years, there would be many players who would come and go, right from Kambli and Amre to VVS, Sanjay Manjrekar and Saurav Ganguly, but he is still standing tall and when you ask him about this he just says “I am still enjoying the game”, a very innocent and straightforward answer indeed. To play for your country for 21 long years and still going on strongly is amazing by any stretch of imagination. But to play consistently for these 21 years and keep contributing to your side’s win is bizzare and maddening. Still some weirdos criticize him for one reason or the other, he just replies them with his bat. Some compare him with Lara, Ponting but he is far above them in stature.

From his beautiful straight drives and perfect extra cover drives to deft touches and paddle sweeps, every budding talent tries to copy him. But he is unique and no one can be like him. His head position is just amazing when he plays those shots. He developed some weapons which were not previously in his armoury. He developed the inside-out shot to whack Shane Warne. He plays this shot to perfection. Jayasuriya troubled him with his negative bowling in one series, it was then he added one more shot- the paddle sweep to his wide range of shots. He developed these shots in between the series and executed them well, this speaks volumes about his greatness.

His record is enough to say that he is beyond comparison to anyone in Tests and One days. But the way he is taking singles and scoring heavily and at a very good strike rate makes him a very versatile player who can adapt to any form of cricket. The way he has rejuvenated and reignited is an answer to his critics who said after the world cup 2007 that his career is over. He is a source of inspiration not only to cricketers but all the sportsperson in the world that age is no barrier.

Just wish him all the luck for the future and may his wish of winning the World Cup at his home comes true next year. It will be the best moment of his life because this is the only success he has not tasted.

Wishing you a very happy birthday.
From one of your billion fans.
