Match Report:Match: 4th Test: Day 2: England v Pakistan at Lord’s, London

Lord’s, London: The Day 2 marked the honors for both ball as well as for the bat. At stumps, both the weapons of the game took equal honors in providing enthralling cricket. If it was Amir’s hostile bowling which sent six English top batsmen back into the pavilion in a whisker of time then it was the batting by Trott and Broad who fought bravely to place England back on top.

Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad joined in the middle when England was deeply holed at 102 for the loss of 6 wickets. This partnership not only helped England to get out of woods but also surged ahead in giving England a commanding position. Trott and Broad involved in one of the finest battle for the eighth wicket under seaming conditions to put up an unbeaten partnership of 244 for the eighth wicket .Jonathan Trott scored his 3rd test century during the process whereas Stuart Broad scored his maiden test century.

Mohammad Amir who is in terrific form went a step ahead ripped England top order earlier in the day.

He took 4 wickets in the first session before lunch and 2 wickets in the post lunch session. Out of 6 wickets, 4 batsmen were sent back to the pavilion without scoring a single run. Amir brilliantly used the seaming conditions to run through English top order.

Pietersen’s bad run continued when he went for an expensive drive on the first delivery, which took a leading edge and was caught behind by Kamran Akmal.

The best part of Amir’s bowling was that he brought the ball back into the right handers and made their lives miserable. Collingwood was one such victim for this kind of bowling.

England by the time it reached 102 runs it lost 7 wickets, which looked down and out. England was looking for someone to take up the fight to the opposition. it was then Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad got into the act for the damage control.

Match Report: 1st Test: Day 4: England v Pakistan at Trent Bridge, Nottingham

Summary Full Scorecard Commentary Statistics

Trent Bridge: England began their season yet again on a very high note by winning the first test match by huge margin of 354 runs. Anderson who had great run on his birthday extended his brilliant form and scalped 6 wickets for 17 runs and also picked up his first Ten wicket haul in his test career. Pakistan was all out for 80 runs in its second innings.

With a daunting task to climb down, Pakistan opted out for the shortest form of cricket to appease themselves that they no more belong to the test cricket but for T-20. Not less than a week, they had a thumping victory over Australia. But, in this week they lost the first test match to England in much worst possible way.

On Day 3 in the last session, England rattled Pakistan by taking 3 wickets for 15 runs. With all in form batsmen were sent back to the pavilion. Pakistan started its Day 4 on a disastrous note when they started to lose the wickets in every alternate over.

Anderson swung the ball both ways and struck every now and then. He completely used the seaming conditions and rattled the Pakistan batting line up. His scalps were Farhat (15), Amin (1), Akmal (4), Shoaib (9), Gul (9) and Asif (0) whereas Finn and Broad took two wickets each.

With every passing Day, the Pakistani cricket is getting reduced to below average. With new team, new captain things are looking out of distance even to make a test combination let alone to have consistency in test cricket.

Danish Kaneria (16) and Imran Farhat (15) were the only two batsmen who scored in double digits and third one was the extra runs (14).Player of the match was given to James Anderson for his brilliant performance.

Initially both the openers got off to a good start but the danger man from Pakistan struck Cook (8) early in the innings which pushed them on the back foot. Mohammad Aamer who is enjoying bowling in these English conditions who created havoc in the recently concluded two test match series against Australia carried his brilliant form into this game as well.

The next installment was fired from Aamer end when he once again struck by removing the other good looking opener, Strauss. By the time England scored 93 runs it lost both the openers. Strauss was caught behind by Kamran Akmal on 45.

Trott and Pietersen were the two new batsmen out in the middle but, Pietersen (8) was sent back by Asif from other end. Two runs later it was Trott who’s good looking and revival innings of 38 came to end when Aamer struck third time in this innings. England was pushed back when it lost 4 wickets for 118 runs.

In Pakistan camp, there were some nervy moments when Danish Kaneria couldn’t control his line and couple of chances were let down by Kamran Akmal. In the first session he dropped a regulation catch of Strauss while in the third (last) session he missed out the stumping of Collingwood of Kaneria bowling.

At stumps on Day 1, England after winning the toss and electing to bat first scored 331 for the loss of 4 wickets. Both Morgan on 125 and Collingwood on 81 remained unbeaten at the end of the play.

It’s very unlikely that England’s test side has lost 4 wickets in just 118 runs at their home.Hats off to Pakistan’s bowling attack!Let’s see howmuch ENG scores as still they have Collingwood,Morgan and Prior. PAK Batsmen have to take the advantage.

When Indian bowlers will start to bowl like Pakistan bowlers to some extent?

  2. girish – its not a rare sight… The only thing is the world has lost good quality bowlers in last few years and the pitches are conducive to batsmen. A good swing attack can put any team on backfoot in english conditions

Wait for next year india’s tour of england, zaheer and ishant would be swinging the to great extent.. If not the same as pakistan bowlers

  3. Girish says:

well Ritesh, let’s see whether Ishant will be in the national side anymore or not after such performance in SL.IMO,he should be dropped. He is neither a swing bowler too.
But Zaheer and Sreesanth can swing the ball more than others,I agree. :)
Now Pakistan is at the backfoot and likely to be follow-on.I think they have batsmen just for T20s now, neither for ODIs nor for Tests. :D

  4. CricketFan says:

there should be more matches played under such conditions.. That’s the only way to test a batsman’s reputation. More test cricket should be played on natural grounds like this where bowlers too get equal opportunity.

  5. admin says:

    @ CricketFan
Please get out of that misconception. A pitch should have something for everyone.. in the last match swann bowled just 3 overs in the whole match and you call that as a good pitch. The pitch in which the india-srilanka match is happening is far better, it has something for everyone, for the batsman, the fast bowlers and the spinners. Let us stop cribbing about the sub continent pitches. Once in a while a pitch like SSC will happen and ICC should try to eliminate them.

A test match should last 5 days, and a match should not get over in 3 days, like what is happening in england and that is not the real exhibition of good test matches.

  6. Mike Hudson says:

How come Salmaan Butt chose to bat 1st at Edgbaston pitch. This pitch is known for helping the bowlers at the start of the game and Pakistan players don’t have technique to combat swing and fast bowling attack well.

    Horrifying decision.

  7. Girish says:

    @ Ajith:
England pitches are not bad.Actually Pakistan does not have a test batting line-up.And look at their squad now.Yousuf is not playing. :D

  8. laxman says:

Last test 80. This test 72. Why blame the pitch or the toss? By the way who will be the next captain and the next selector?

  9. admin says:

    @ Girish

It is not just a matter of pakistan, what about australia? when is the last time a match in england went till the 5 th day? Even Australia crumbled.

It is not just with pak, even enland and australia crumbled.. if not for paki fielding lapses the scoreboard would have been much worse.

  10. Girish says:

    @ Ajith:
What’s wrong in these pitches? If England can score 112-2,then Pakistan’s 72 ALL OUT is not acceptable at all.Well,India played much better last time n won the test series there by winning the Napier Test. :)

  11. admin says:

    @ Girsh
England scored 112-2 after 5 dropped catches, asif was unplayable… even gully cricketers will field much better than the paki fielders. Kamran was dropped for poor catching and the new keeper dropped another one for his quota..

Winning Napier test?? in england?? i guess you are giving wrong facts. Yes india won a hard fought series, where none of our batsmen made a century (only kumble made one).. that is what I am saying, the contest should be even between the bat and the ball and the pitch should give something for everyone.. Despite applying himself fully and hit on his body every over against sidebottom, sachin was not able to hit a century.

In England the issue is not just the pitch, the real factor is the climate which will help the ball swing. When it is cloudly wickets will fall in heap, and when it is sunny the ball will not do anything at all. There have been lot of high scoring draws and boring matches happened in England (say the oval or lords). The result out of such matches will not truly reflect the performance of the team. Where as good indian tracks, will reflect the teams performance.

Ideally the first day morning should aid the fast bowlers, the second and third day should aid the batsman, and the fourth and the fifth day should aid the spinners. That is a complete package, a pitch like sydney, chennai, kolkatta, centurion and so on..

  12. Girish says:

I almost agree with you Ajith. And yes,I was talking about that series in which only Kumble was able to score 110 from Indians.First test was drawnby Rain,MSD,Sreesanth….3rd test was drawn thanks to poor decision by the then skipper Dravid though India had a winning chance. And I guess the 2nd test was at Napier where Zaheer destroyed the English batting.
Zaheer was given the MOS with Anderson and India won that series 1-0.Please correct me if I’m wrong. :)

    @Girish

Napier is in New Zealand. I guess you are talking about Nottingham, anyways that series ended with 1-0 with two drawn matches, how can that be a better series?

Not just this series, there are numerous matches that ended up as high scoring draws in England when the skies are bright, but the english media never speaks about it.

It is okay for these people when the matches are getting over in 2 or three days with all sub 100 scores, but if in subcontinent we produce a spinning track, these guys will crib about it calling it as dust bowl. Did we ever crib about perth, durban or headingly?

Luck plays a major role in england, if the conditions are to your favor then you win..

  14. Girish says:

    @ Ajith:
Extrmely sorry for the mistake.Yes,I was talking about Nottingham where the 2nd test was played.
I agree with you about the English pitches. But in subcontinent, you can find dead pitches very often. If you play a 5 match test series, most probably you will get 2 good pitches(may be spinning in the last two days)but the other 3 will be poor and batting friendly only.
But it’s sad to hear from Ponting that Indian pitches are DEAD and FLAT.He should have checked at least Eden and Chepak before his statement.

  15. laxman says:

Has Mr. Ricky Ponting anytime said anything nice about the cricket and the cricketers, of the subcontinent?
By the way its the weather that in England makes the ball dancing more than the pitches. Ifeel playing in England throws a huge challenge.

  16. Girish says:

@ Laxman Sir: Yes,Ricky Ponting has praised Sachin Tendulkar and said that he is just follwing his ‘n’ no. of records. :D

Agree about the weather and pitch of England. But Pakistan may have the upper hand in this test as Mohd Yousuf is back and England is bowled out for 233.

Wahab Riaz,a debutant, got 5 test wickets of England players in England. Can any of the Indian bowlers do this on his debut? :(

  17. laxman says:

    @Girish,
Ha HA ha, If Harbhajan retires and comes back to play again afterr two years!!!

  18. Girish says:

    Then Harbhajan won’t be a debutant. :D
Mohd Yousuf might be the key for Pak in this match.

  19. laxman vernekar says:

80, 72 and now 74 and 147. ARE REALLY PITCHES TO BLAME?

  20. Girish says:

    @ Laxman Sir: MATCH FIXING…… :D :D :D :D

  21. laxman vernekar says:

Does this mean even they fix the pitch and the weather too?

  22. Haha! Umar Akmal was trying too much unorthodox! Afridi wasnt able to clear! Though Akhtar and Afridi bowled with some fire but that wasn’t enough!
