Stuart Broad an all-rounder in the making

A little guy running with a bat on the field of Oakham School years ago ran for England to save a crucial test match on 28th August, 2010 at Lords against Pakistan on the 4th test match of the NPower Test Series 2010. Do I have to tell you who this guy is? He’s none other than Stuart Broad.
His cricketing coach at Oakham School saw an all-rounder in him from the very beginning. He firstly developed his batting skill during the age of 14 to 15 and went on to open the innings for his school team. Then during his 15 to 16 he was developed as a bowler and opened the bowling for the team in his last two years at school along with opening the innings. So even if he was a left handed opening batsman at the first place he was actually born to be an all-rounder. He was called in the England National team as a bowler and started his international career on the 28th August, 2006 in a T20 match against Pakistan.
In the same year he was announced the Cricket Writers “Club Cricketer of the Year” as batsman of Leicestershire County Club. From then on this talented career took off for good. He debuted for England in the ODI on 30th August, 2006 and in test on 9th December, 2007. He was signed by the Nottinghamshire Outlaws and later on cemented his place in the national side with priceless eye catching performances. England cricket was craving to see retired Andrew Flintoff in him but he was still too young to say something for sure.
Though he showed signs of being able to take the responsibility, he was a learning youngster, perhaps he still is. Where English Cricket found hope in a young player, the whole world enjoyed fantastic performances of a young fellow, an all-rounder in the making. He won matches several times for England with his excellent bowling and dependable aggressive batting down the order. But the cricketing world finally found a potential match winner in him when he delivered the goods under pressure in the 5th Ashes test against the mighty Aussies at The Oval in the year 2009.
He scored a half century in the series as well. 4th test of the NPower Test series 2010, Day 2, the score board flashing England 102 for 7 in the first innings, England number 3 Jonathon Trott is glued at one end, Stuart Broad jogs into the ground with his bat to join Trott with everybody rather expecting the new ball in his hand pretty soon. His bat was silent for the long time before he scored a 48 in the previous match. He batted pretty well! Actually he batted extremely well to get to his 50 sensibly with a handy strike rate which was desperately needed for England when Trott was seemingly playing a supporting innings instead. The question was “Can he keep going?” He kept going and grabbed his first career century, 2nd after the lonely one at school.
Both the batsmen kept batting and were unbeaten overnight. Day3, they break the record for highest ever partnership for England against Pakistan for any wicket in tests and set a new record for highest eighth wicket partnership in test matches before Stuart finally got out lbw on his personal score of 169. England went on to finish with 446 all out in their first innings after being 7 wickets down with only 102 on the score board. This talented young man is still only 24 and surely has far to go in the future. 4th test match fixing scandal has shaken the whole cricketing world. Investigations are on going.
Some Pakistani players are suspected to be involved. The worst part of the incident is for this scandal this glorious test match is at a risk of being removed from the record books. That would be unfair for the England team, especially for Stuart. It’s hard not to feel for him who lived one of the very best days of his life that day. He did it once, he can surely do it again but he might not find a stage as perfect as this.

Toomany allrounders these days.
I think he is an All-Rounder like Jadeja.Got that 169 just coz of Match-fixing.
He’s far from a complete all rounder yet. I know that and that’s exactly why I wrote about an all rounder in the making. Who’s Jadeja? He’s Indian I guess. Sorry I don’t know much about Jadeja the cricketer, let alone Jadeja the all rounder. So more people know Stuart than Jadeja I bet. Then how can you compare these two anyway? Good day
Yes, more people know Broad,I agree. But as a bowler only. How can he be an All-Rounder in making with one innings of 169 against the match fixers?
Harbhajan Singh also has the same batting ability. So is Harbhajan an All-Rounder in making? I hope you know Harbhajan. Anyway, no issues with the article. Carry on.
Thanks for the encouragement
Firstly none else made Broady’s century for him other than himself. May be there was match fixing crap but yet Broady had to face balls coming towards him at a decent speed. 2ndly, that was just spot fixing nothing like Pakistanis were sleeping and not bowling at all, just waiting for him to complete his century. 3rdly, that H Sing can really bat like a true batter like Broady did that day? And don’t forget that Broady had been batting from when he was in school with a dream to be a batsman which is different from like you can hold a bat, hit some balls and cover your wicket I bet. So I guess I win and your 2nd comparison also can’t stand steel in front of Broady. Lol
Loving the banter with you mate I must admit. Cheers
Haha…Harbhajan has batted many times before in these conditions thugh not a century. He has scored against AUS in AUS. Sachin wanted to be a PACER from his childhood. So can he bowl pace now?
There’s a big difference between the past and present.Hope you understand.Pakistanis were sleeping like a fish….opening the eyes.LOL
I guess you are from England. Broad is a good bowler,no doubt. But no where near being an all-rounder specially for tests.
Broady’s century had to be done by himself only. There is no rule in Cricket that one batsman can score for another.
The support and the debate on “Broad” is getting broader and broadest way respectively. ::)
@Vijay Great one mate. I’m still laughing! @Girish The way that H Sing bats, I wish to cry :’( He’s a decent batter down the order but nowhere near a proper batsman what so ever. Sachin? A pacer? Wait, he now doesn’t wish to carry on his bowling as a part of his cricketing career which is a big difference. Broady does wish to carry on doing both. Most importantly not all can do enough justice to each and every single talent of theirs. I won’t say that Sachin didn’t. Well, I have no right to say that. We r debating for nothing. Only time will tell who’s wrong and who’s right. Please do remember this banter if someday you have no choice other than agreeing with me
Will you? Promise?
I have absolutely no admiration for batting talents of both Broad and Harbhajan Singh. Even calling them an “all-rounder in making” is an insult to the phrase “all-rounder”. They are even not a pale shadow of the greats like Botham, Hadlee, Kapil, Imran, Akram and Kallis. The other day somebody raised here the same debate to raise Shaheed Afridi above the bar. But frankly speaking the tag, “all-rounder” is not that cheap for asking!
But Yeah, there is a great similaity between the two, H’Singh and Broad. Their temparament, their cricketing mannerisms match perfectly.
And further, Stuart Broad has a dubious record of going for full monty of 36 runs in an over not too long in the distant past. And the way Harbhajan is bowling these days, he also may achieve the same in near future irrespective of what wheather they had dreamt it or not in school.
No similarities between that man and Broady. Broady’s only 24 and achieved so much. It’s your problem that you guys can’t see a young talent growing every aspect of his game with every passing day. No point of comparing him with a batting great of 35 who tried bowling someday, a spinner who is only a handy tail ender, a player who’s hardly known and now the problem is that he’s not a legend like Botham and all. Guys, he’s only 24 for crying out loud!
England cricketers are only good for England. Let Broad play a series outside his home country and he will be worthless again.
@Alok Very funny
Then England should play “Abroad eleven” outside England. Lol
@ Priya: The way Broad bats specially against the spin, there is every possibility of being out.If he concentrates on batting, then wait for another Irfan Pathan.
@ Laxman Sir: Agree with you.But Akram should not be in that list,I think. Harbhajan will get 6 wickets in an over, just opposite to Broad, very soon.
@ Alok: Rightly said dude.I can’t believe that people started talking about ALL ROUNDER Broad just after a 169 againt the match-fixers.
@Priya it wasnt funny. Pls recall Broad’s comments in last WI tour. He was frustated bowling in WI.
Against Pak before 3rd Test, his place was not certain. Thats the Broad for you.
And for English team, they will fail once again in away Ashes series. They are totaly a faiure outside England.
@Girish Excuse me, expecting Broady to be Irfan was a complement or an insult? Even if you have problem calling him an all rounder, I bet you can’t disagree that he’s a bowler who can surely bat better than a tail ender anyway mate. @Alok I remember he said that but it was years ago. Practice changes all. I can definitely see a better bowler in him than when he first started. And Oz is far different than WI moreover, Broady spent almost half of his first class career there. So it should never be as frastrating for him as it was even in WI let alone in Oz
And Girish, a handy batsman down the order is exactly what makes him an ALL ROUNDER in the making. @Alok I don’t understand why people keep saying that. Broady’s place in the team was never under pressure what so ever mate
@ Priya: I don’t expect Broad to be Irfan or an All Rounder like Botham. He will remain the same Stuart Broad who can be handy at his home ground and go for 6 sixes in an over abroad.

He might contribute with the bat in short versions of the game, but not in test unless some match fixers allow him.IMO, that 169 was just occasional and that does not mean he has become an All-rounder or even in making.
His teammate Ian Blackwell has scored a double ton and his batting record is much better.Yet he’s not been tagged as an ALL ROUNDER.
Jason Gillespie scored a double ton being a night watch man.He was never an ALL ROUNDER IN MAKING either.
When you say “he’s a bowler who can surely bat better than a tail ender anyway”, you should also realise that he,himself is a tail ender only and you never know who will blast at the tail at any occasion.Suraj Randiv and Nuwan Kulasekara are the best examples.Broad has never been a HANDY BATSMAN down the order like Daniel Vettori.
Oh crap! Why r we doing this anyway? Look at you who came up with all those “never comparable with Broady” names once again. Goodness! I see a potential batsman in him as does Boycott too. He compares him with Sir Gary and you say this. You’ll say it’s against fixers and it’s occasional and else! Whatever it was, it was just a hint what he is capable of. You say for yourself that none of your examples are considered as all rounders but you can’t see that fact that he had been playing for his school team and Leicestershire as an opening fast bowler and an opening batsman for all those years. That wasn’t just to see him only bowling and not batting for England. All those coaches did hours of practice with him to built him an all rounder not just a bowler who can come handy with the bat not very often. Cricket greats see an all rounder and you see a mere bowler. What a pain!
Cricket Greats!!Ohhh…..okay….you enjoy with them…
For me, he remains an average bowler and the current best English pacer either….Anderson is better,I’ll say.
Thanks I will. And Jimmy is definitely The best swing bowler. Don’t start jumping that u won! But Broady is totally different kind of bowler. Hey, leave this! I’ll forget this banter and remember u as a friend. Guess the topic of my next article. I’ve already sent it for edition so no chance of cheating from me
just give him perform ouside Britain once then talk about Allrounder capabilities. Agarkar was also allrounder as he scored his maiden hundred in Lords.
1. I feel there is cricket there are worthy cricketers outside England too. And pity is that having all these worthy cricketers England has NEVER WON ODI WORLD CUP. Like a young debuting team it has just won its first Silverware only this year, 2010 that too from the shortest version of the game.
2.At 24!! He is alredy there in the circuit since some years. By now he is a senior member of the team too. Look at the statistics of the greats I have mentioned when they were at 24. That is the reason why I say, Broady is not even a pale shadow of them.
3.Nowadays one innings by a bowler and people tag their favourite as an all-rounder. And its quite natural as “all-rounder” has become a rare commodity. But one should realise simple basics that the tag “all-rounder” doesnt come that cheap.
4. And the said “similarity” stands out. There is no doubt about it.
@Alok Just wait and see him now. And what the hell about this Agarkar now? Does he even play anymore? @Laxman he’s not yet a senior player in the team mate. Only Finny is younger than him who’s not yet a permanent member. It’s just a start of a “Broad” era and they have already won one of the greatest achievements of English cricket history. If they can carry on like this there should be no stopping. While an all rounder is just in the making, people debate about his abilities but when he becomes a proper all rounder, everyone admits. Let’s sit back and enjoy this sort of banters until the day finally comes
yeah Agarkar is like a hell and same is Board. In India he cant reach in double figures. If Punter cant score double digit score then who is this Board?
He is a child. Give him some time to be matured.
@Alok looks like he played for years and didn’t score! He’s still learning and has a brighter future than all the examples u come up with anyway. That’s why I call him an all rounder “in the making” got it?
Broad is a good bowler when his rhythm is right and smooth. Any new bowler can be termed as an allrounder in the making.. and we can claim that they will improve their batting. A century in a fixed match under dubious conditions means nothing..
He is a brat with a poor attitude, and with good bowling skills.. period..
@Ajith But not every bowler can be batting and bowling spearhead of a team at the same time in their young age. And of course he’s an aggressive young man who makes the game interesting but the balance will come with time and experience.
@ Priya: I’m waiting for ur next article. But Ponting is not the best Aussie skipper, it’s Steve Waugh just like Dada is the best Indian skipper, not Dhoni.

I’m not Mazhar Majeed that I’ll bet with you on Stuart Broad.
As Alok said Agarkar is better than Broad in all aspects. But why are you comparing both now?Agarkar is not playing because he is 30+ and there is a better All-Rounder like Praveen Kumar is in the team.At the age of 24,Agarkar was known as a good All-Rounder, far better than Broady.
I really can’t believe you are cheering for Broad more than Mortaza or Shakib or Tamim etc. Anyway, enjoy posting.
@Girish Hey how can know about my new article before it is even out? That’s very bad, unfair! ;-D And excuse me, I wasn’t comparing him with anyone, I can’t even dream of doing that. I was sick of you guys coming up with usuless comparisons
I believe it’s not a must to support your country even if they are not yet good enough. (I love everything inch perfect. That’s another problem!) Don’t worry I’ll be the first person to shout for them when they improve and be one of the best teams in business
I <3 the game and <3 the team who are arguably the very best in business or should I say had been THE best for a very long time
And don't be a Mazeed please ;-D Who wants that sort of a person as a friend? Not me. I don't know why I think Broady has a potential, something like always hungry, tempered when he's not coming good because he knows he can but not happening at that moment. After all these my gut feelings tell that he is the man to watch out for and Eng cricket might finally achieve things they had always been craving for. But I do believe that it's still too early to say something! And I'm an Aussie supporter btw
@ Priya: We’ll discuss about the best Aussie skipper after that article is published officially. These days most of the Aussie supporters are against Punter BTW.

)in that. That’s why I raised question over the header of this article.
I believe that one should support his own nation first.Anyway, I’m not Mazeed and I said that just because you invited me for a bet on Stuart Broad.
I believe that Eoin Morgan is the next big thing for England.Though Broad is only 24,he is a senior player because of the no. of matches he has played.ENG won the T20 WC in WI, Broad was preferred over Anderson. But the format which is mainly for All-rounders,Broad could not prove himself as an all-rounder (or IN THE MAKING
It is “Nottinghamshire Outlaws” and not Nottinghamshire Outlands. I dont like to see the name of the county team which I support wrongly any where
5th test Ashes test against the mighty Aussies at Lords in the year 2006-07 – 5th Test was at Oval and Lord’s
4th test of the NatWest series 2010 – Test series in ENG is sponsored by NPower and not Natwest
Get your facts right when you write some stuff.
and the match winning innings he played along with Bopara against India @ Old Trafford ODI 2007 is not mentioned here…also the 6 Sixes in 2007 T20 WC( a low point for any bowler) should have mentioned here
Not at Lords I mean in the previous comment [:P]
@Jose Thanks mate. What the hell I’ve written! God! I’m to request the editor in no time. And the Ashes was of ’09. 5th test was at Lord’s. You also are a Notts fan. Wow! Me too
@Girish You again start from the very beginning now. I’m not interested to say all the same over again
Better quarelling about that later definitely
@ Priya: 100% agree this time.
@Girish Thank God! You finally agree with me once at least.
No 5th test was @ Oval
~
http://www.cricinfo.com/engvaus2009/engine/current/match/345974.html
and I am a Notts fan because of a certain Australian, and not Broad
Hi Jose, thanks for the correction once more
Because of D. Huss or Nannes? I’m of course a fan of Notts bcoz of Broady but I was super happy to see my Aussie fellows there. I’m a huge Aussie fan after all
Good day
Whenever i see him 6 sixes come to my mind!
@ Deepak
Lol…. Well if you remember he was firstly thrashed by Sachin and Dada in that 7 Odi series in England 2007 before the T-20 world cup,2007. Broad has attitude problem since then, he even dared to go past Dada, and Dada being dada gave him ” stare and then a earful!!
@Deepak I look at him n thank God that he had those downs to make him a better bowler now. @Vijay Who likes fast sleeping bowlers? They have to be under batsmen’s skin. That makes the game interesting
