Greatest Sports Brands of All time – Michael Jordon and Sachin Tendulkar

| September 9, 2010 | 33 Comments

Every sport will have its own greats, but very few can change the complexion of a sport entirely like what Jordon and Sachin has done. NBA is not the same without Jordon and Cricket will not be the same when Sachin hangs his boots. NBA did not make Jordan popular, but Jordan made NBA popular around the world. Likewise cricket did not make Sachin popular, but Sachin made cricket popular throughout India, where every kid wanted to become Sachin Tendulkar. The similarity between the two did not end there

1)      They were both from middle class families with many kids and lived in the commercial capital of their countries.

2)      Michael Jordan tried out for the university basketball team, but at 5’11″ (1.80 m) he was deemed too short to play at that level and was rejected. Likewise when Tendulkar went to MRF pace foundation, he was deemed too short and was rejected. (Michael Jordan worked out and increased his height; Sachin focused on batting and they both went on to become the best in their field).

3)      Both lost their fathers during the peak of their career. Michael Jordan’s father wanted him to play Baseball, his father’s death led him to retire from Basket Ball and he played Baseball in MLB just as his father dreamed. Sachin after losing his father went on to continue playing the World Cup as his mother insisted that his father would have wanted him to play for the country. Sachin’s father sponsored a kid from underprivileged family. He sent the kid who deliver the newspaper every day to school and took care of his education as the kid could not afford it. That after being a big family and living a middle class life. It was his father’s dream to help as many kids as possible by educating them. Sachin after the death of his father is pursuing what his father dreamt of, every year he sponsors 200 kids’ education. Works with cancer institute, funds blind children’s orphanages and does a lot more charity work without publicity.

4)       Both Michael Jordan and Sachin Tendulkar are skillful in many games. While Jordon can play Baseball and American Football, Sachin was exceptionally skilled with Table Tennis, Karting and Soccer. Leander Peas after being defeated by Sachin in a series of Table Tennis matches said “He then said it is not cricket which made Sachin Famous, but Sachin would have become famous in any game he played.”

5)      They have an extremely passionate fan base across countries and across clubs they play. When Jordan represented Chicago Bulls he was supported by everyone across all the club fans. When he played in the Olympics he was supported by fans from every country. Likewise in IPL when Sachin plays he gets support across every city even if he is playing against them. Despite being arch rivals Pakistan fans want Sachin to perform and India to lose the match.

6)      Both Michael Jordan and Sachin Tendulkar feature in the top 5 of biggest sporting achievements ever, which features “The Shot” of Jordan and Sachin’s debut as a 16 year old.

Similarity Between Quotes about these two greats

Mathew Hayden “I have seen God. He bats at number 4 for India.”

His Airness

Andy Flower – “There are 2 kinds of batsmen in the world. One Sachin Tendulkar; two all the others”

'Ton'dulkar

Success is a process… During that journey sometimes there are stones thrown at you, and you convert them into milestones. – Sachin Tendulkar

Brand Jordan and Brand Sachin Tendulkar

Michael Jordan and Sachin Tendulkar have been the biggest brands of their respective games. Till the beginning of 2010 Jordan was the highest earning Basket Ball player and his record was broken by Kobe Byrant. Despite that Jordan is the biggest Brand to come out of sports in the US because he remained as the most sought after brand ambassador for over 15 years, likewise in a 20 year cricketing career Sachin has been the highest paid cricketer until this year when Dhoni overtook him. But as a brand Sachin is far ahead of any other sports person in India or for that matter among any celebrity.

Brand Jordan "The Jumpman"

Only those brand ambassadors who are durable can become a brand by themselves. Michael Jordan was a big brand ambassador in the 80s and till date he is a big brand ambassador. Sachin was a big brand ambassador in the early 90s and after two decades he still is a huge brand ambassador.  While all other sports personalities’ performances and looks dictate their value, Jordan and Sachin are past that constraint, their value is not dependent on their performances.

While Nike created a brand based on Jordan titled “air Jordan” for the athletic goods, Adidas is doing the same with Sachin on cricket goods with his brand ST. Future group and Manipal Group started sports goods and Fitness goods with Sachin’s Brand S drive and Sach’s. Virgin Comics went on to make him as a super hero in their comic collection.

Brand Sachin "ST"

Commentators have often dubbed many new and emerging players as the next Michael Jordan including Hardaway, Grant Hill, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Vince Carter, and Dwyane Wade none went on to achieve his greatness in the sport or in popularity. This is the same with cricket, the commentators often say new emerging players as the next Tendulkar, but no one is even coming close to his greatness in the sport or in popularity.

As their brands are not purely built upon their sporting achievements, but upon the way they influenced the lives of millions of common men.  The common man became happy with their success and felt sorrow with every failure of theirs.

Sachin himself is an admirer of Michael Jordan, in an interview (in 1999 when Sachin was 26 and Jordan was 36) when asked about Jordan, Sachin replied

I really do admire Michael Jordan for his fitness, I think he is 36, and to be at the top when somebody is that age really requires a lot of hard work and sacrifice. I really do admire him. My lifelong ambition is to play for as long as possible for India, and to keep winning matches for India.

He sure is living his dream and being on top of his game even at 37 and continuing to dominate world cricket, we wish him to play even after he cross the 40 mark like what Michael Jordan did.

The moment i saw the title, i knew it was from our(CricAges) Ace writer::) who is writing such minute and detailed way to give the account of these two legends. Brilliant!!!

What a way to begin to my morning::)

    Thanks a lot Ajith!!

  2. Sameer says:

    Good work ajith.
    Nice read.

  3. Siddharth Chhaya says:

Nice article by Ajith. But I disagree with one point here. Without Cricket and NBA existing in this world no body would have known Sachin or Jordan. So you can’t say game is NOT greater then it’s players. Cricket was already popular in India since it’s independence in 1945. But it became a hysteria once India won the world cup in 1983, when Sachin was just 9 years old Kid.

Cricket gave him the platform, what he is today. He certainly gave the speed and broke all the limits of the game.

Being from old school of thoughts, I always believe no player is greater then then sports he plays.

  4. @ Siddharth

Well Jordan after his first retirement went on to represent Chichago White Sox in Minor League Baseball and averaged a healthy .2 plus which by any means is a great feat for someone who is completely new to that game. With his greatness and athleticism he could have very well dominated other sports as well..

Nadal is an extraordinary soccer player as well.. there are numerous such examples. Athleticism, body coordination, love for the sport, hard work and passion are the basic ingredient for a sporting great.

Many keep talking about the game being bigger than players… but the fact is, it is the great players who make the game.. be it Babe Ruth, Jordan, Bradman or Sachin.. they are all bigger than the game.. The game is different with and without them..

in the 90s more than 50% of the people switched off their TVs if Sachin got out. If the game been bigger than the player, then people would have continued to watch the match.. People want to see Sachin play, the TRP ratings and the ground attendance is testimony for this fact.

Same is the case with Jordan’s first retirement announcement. It was the headlines of all major newspaper around the world, and the next season stadium attendance for Bulls is a testimony for the greatness of Jordan.

  5. siddharth says:

    @ Ajit

Those who used to close there TVs after Sachin got out were either fools or not so educated about cricket or wanted to see only Sachin to play and get back to their jobs, and that doesn’t make a player greater then the game. This example can’t stand to counter this argument of mine.

Game will always be greater then the player, because its natural law that parents always take birth before us. Without our parents we can’t even think of breathing in this world.

No one can doubt or argue about Sachin’s greatness as a cricketer, but even if you ask him, he will say that without Cricket he is nothing.

  6. Great article man!:) So Nice to read! Specially the quotes!:)

  7. laxman vernekar says:

“Cricket didnt make Sachin popular. But Sachin made Cricket popular”.
But without Cricket, Sachin would not have been known to the people beyond his relatives and friends. Its the only talent the master cherished since his childhood.
So just imagine what Sachin would have been without Cricket, or Jordan would have been without Basketball or Maradonna without football or Scumacher without Racing and so on.
So I agree to the extent that every sports has been developed so as change its complexion and to make it immensely popular by these legends.
Idol Worshipping is fine but saying a player is above the game is a bit too much and seems offending.

  8. Girish says:

Nice article. But I don’t know whether the comment of Matthew Hayden is true or not. When did he say that?

  9. @ Laxman

Saying that the game is more than anyone else is nothing more than a cliche.

I don’t think it is offending to say that the players are bigger than the game.

Babe Ruth was definitely bigger than Baseball, and every baseball lover will accept that. He took baseball to every house. He changed the game, and rules were changed because of him.

In a charity match Usain Bolt clean bowled Gayle and hit sixes against a proper Jamaica team.

Keiron Pollard keep hitting home runs in a baseball match in major league baseball to everyone’s astonishment.

A Game is nothing without the players. A game keep changing but the legends stay. The only thing that stayed permanent till date in cricket is the length of the pitch and every other rule is changed and tweaked throughout.

Why did the rule of the degree of flexing of arms change in cricket? If the game was bigger than the players, then every bowler should have been banned except sarwan. If the game was bigger than the players, then Wasim akram who was a proven cheater according to the Quyaam report should have been banned from cricket.. but even in this very portal we keep singing his praises.. why?

Great Sportsmen are like great musicians, for musicians language is just one avenue of expressing their talent, any day they can choose another language to express themselves if they are great.. likewise for a great sportsmen a particular sport is just a way to express their talent..

What happened to west indies strength? do they lack in talent? a land which produced such bowlers will not become barren suddenly, the simple fact which everyone acknowledges is people pick up other sports like basketball, baseball or athletics.

A Richards or Powell could well become huge Baseball players. Cricket did not make them popular, cricket is just an avenue to exhibit their talent. Thats it. Period.

  10. @ Siddharth

Education or cricket knowledge has nothing to do with the love of a player over the game.

When Sachin was asked “What would have you been if you did not become a cricketer?”

And he answered “I would have become a sportsman in any other sport”.

Ian Botham represented a football club as well.. and there are players who played more than one game for their countries. Playing and sports is in the dna of man.. new sports and games will keep coming that will not take anything away from a genius.

There is no cricket in US, and these people laugh at cricket and the concept of playing a sport over 5 days. 95% of the Indians don’t know the rules of basekball, but when Jordan is in air defying the laws of gravity.. People love it beyond the game.. Likewise when people who don’t know cricket learn that a 15 year old kid after getting his nose broken and with blood flowing went on to play and dominate the same opponents they love that incident and love the kid.

Barrack Obama saying that the productivity of IT industry falls by 5% when sachin plays is a testimony to this fact.. or when Sambit Bal said we need to order more Sachin Servers.. A site like Espn Cricinfo could not handle their server when sachin plays.

When Sachin Said that ODIs should be split in to two innigns.. the whole world including ICC panel took notice, and australia went on to implement it, and shortly it will be the case everywhere. Now if the game is bigger why should it change?

A game or a sport is always created by people, played by people and watched by people. A game can never be bigger than the people. If people don’t want a game it gets extinct. So for people to play or watch, there will always be other games.

  11. laxman vernekar says:

I just have not understood whatever the crap you have argued. It looks totally unrelated. It does not answer any of my simple questions. Hopefully somebody else will solve my problems.
By the way according to you Quyumm is right and Wasim is Wrong. But Sachin is right and Proctor is wrong. Afridi bites the ball in the public, but he is the next all-rounder for the world. Pollard is improvising baseball, Bolt is hero with Jamaican cricket etc etc. Its very confusing.
But when you are firm on your utterance like a player is above the game I have nothing left to say much. And as such its very difficult to convince the Hero Worshippers.
Finally I am asking again a very simple question What Sachin would be without cricket? Had he reached that iconic status? Its Sachin who is born out of cricket and not the other way.

  12. @ Laxman
//By the way according to you Quyumm is right and Wasim is Wrong.//

    a) My point is not about who is right and who is wrong. My point is stars being bigger than the game. Cricket and cricket lovers needed wasim, else despite fixing a match why was he permitted to play again? why others who were just accomplices like ata-ur-rahman banned for life?

    b) Why was the arm flexing rule amended during the murali controversy?

Why is football not popular in india? because it did not have a star

// Pollard is improvising baseball, Bolt is hero with Jamaican cricket etc etc. Its very confusing.//

The point is simple.. For a good sportsman there will not be a barrier. A genius will exhibit the talent in whatever avenue he selects. Like Sachin going for cricket ahead of his childhood passion of tennis, and Botham playing cricket ahead of soccer, or nadal choosing tennis over soccer. The game is just an avenue.

///////Finally I am asking again a very simple question What Sachin would be without cricket? Had he reached that iconic status? Its Sachin who is born out of cricket and not the other way//////

Well.. I ask you a simple question.. how did cricket came in to being and became popular? of its own? or because of people who created the game and the stars who popularized it?

Any Game to thrive should have greats playing that game and not the other way around.

Even I can conceptualize a game and create a new game (like someone who few centuries before created cricket), but unless a great exhibit his talent in the game and popularizes it will not be popular.

The reason why Cricket is famous in India is because of Old stalwarts like Kapil and Gavaskar and Later by Sachin, and Sachin took the game to every house, in the villages who don’t know the rules of game started seeing it just for him.

Football is not popular in India because there are no greats playing the game in India.

If you read my point in the article. I have said that, it is Sachin who made cricket popular in India and not the other way around.

Every american will accept that Babe Ruth is bigger than baseball, and that he made baseball popular and took it to every house.

A game will fade and die if not for stars..

  13. akshara says:

an superb articel :) great work

  14. afsar hayat ansari says:

    so true…

  15. laxman vernekar says:

    @Ajith,
As far as you say, the players improvise the game, they change the complexion of the game, they change the game, the way they want to play, they popularise the game, etc etc is all accepted. There is no issue about it.
Afterall the game need to be evolved. It needs to be improvised according to the needs of the generation. But then you cannot put the player above the game. A star is born out of the game and definitely not the other way. And Sachin has just played the game. He has not invented the game. So nobody would have known Sachin if Cricket was not invented all.
Football is not popular because its not promoted by the managers properly. Its not marketed properly, the way cricket was showcased. Otherwise Football is worldwide most watched and played across the world. May be at least 100 times more than Cricket. Even in india more people watch and relish football more than cricket. EURO, FIFA, EPL definitely have more TV spectators in INDIA than its counter-parts in cricket.

  16. Anish says:

@Ajith: I don understand y are u hell bent wit ur statement dat “A player is greater than the game”.
I am as strong an admirer of Sachin as u are but to be honest i don think Sachin or for that matter any player is greater than the game.
If u admire Sachin then u must even respect his statements.
He himself has said it numerous times that he is just a learner of the game and can never be greater than Cricket.
So rather than bein adamant try to accept others point of view too…

  17. Rohan says:

Sachin is a legend, hes my hero! but saying things like Cricket did not make Sachin popular is wrong! it was popular even BEFORE Sachin, give respect to the game that made the man!

  18. @ Laxman

You are absolutely right about Football. We follow EPL and there are guys who can name the squad of MU with in seconds.. but how many know about the the Indian domestic teams?

Everyone know who is the next big star being signed by Real Madrid, but nothing about Tamil Nadu soccer team. How many kids do you see wanting to become a soccer star?

Whereas till lately everyone knew about the Indian hockey team, and lot of people took up hockey because of Dyanchand. There was a legacy left behind by him. He inspired thousands of people to take up the sport. He is a demigod for any hockey aspirant in India. He was called as the father of Indian Hockey.. It did not have any good promoter.

If we had a legend like Dyanchand/Sachin playing football, then obviously many would have taken up the sport and the sport would have been popular in the country.

Nobody took the efforts to popularize cricket in India.. Greats came and achieved great things and the game became popular. Sachin said that it is the 1983 world cup which inspired him to take up the sport.. Sehwag, Dhoni and a huge number of current players always said that they took up this game because of sachin.. and it is a fact that after Sachin’s heroics millions took up this game. Everyone wanted to become like Sachin. No one can deny this fact.

Cricket’s age is more than 3 centuries now.. but why did so many people wanted to be cricketer? It is to emulate the stars..

And the statement about football not being promoted.. it is the wrong way of looking at things.. No one promoted cricket until the stars came.. There were players who represented india and did not have money to pay their house rent.

Till date Badminton never had any coverage.. and Saina came and achieved and sponsors now rush to sponsor her as well as the tournaments in which she plays… and in another couple of years there will lot of people taking up this sport.

  19. @ Anish
Well.. I have very high respect for Laxman. A debate will have two sides, and that doesn’t mean that I am adamant.

Yes, Sachin said that and that shows humility, thats it. And above all my statement was “Sachin made cricket popular in india and not the other way around”

A game is just a set of rules, which are framed by someone. It is the legends who take the game to everyone. It was W.C.Grace for England and Sachin for India.

In England at the entrance of the stadiums there will be an official board which says “If Grace plays the entry fee is 1 pound else 6 pence”. If people came to watch cricket then why was a different entry fee only when Grace plays?

Cricket writers when writing about Grace they say “the game he transformed into a national institution”. Cricket was created nearly 300 years before Grace was born, but he made cricket a national phenomenon. Umpires were forced to revoke decisions against him, as it is often said that “people came to watch Grace and not cricket”.. now if cricket is greater than Grace then why did such a thing happen? Infact, when an umpire gave him out.. he went to the umpire and said “people came here to see me bat and not to see you officiate the match”

BBC quoted “He created modern Cricket” and ranjitsinji said that “he is the maker of modern cricket”. No matter how differently you think.. the fact is cricket gained more from Grace and not the other way around..

If cricket was greater than the players why was the chucking rule changed rather than banning the violating players?

I say it again, a game is just a set of rules.. it is the legends who make the game popular.

  20. @ Rohan

It was not my statement. It was the statement of Leander Paes and I thoroughly endorse it.

  21. Suhrud92 says:

    Man What An Article……….!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. sandyman says:

an excellent article! Hats off to the writer!!!

  23. sandyman says:

@ALL THOSE WHO OPPOSE AJITH’S POINT: Sachin was 9 yrs old wen India won d world cup and this must have diverted his attention towards cricket and he went on to concentrate in the sport which eventually lead him to where he’s now. Given the amount of respect and hard-work he puts, he could’ve easily mastered any game. I firmly believe that if Hockey was at its peak during the same period and had Sachin chosen Hockey over Cricket the status of Hockey wouldn’t have been this horrible today! After all, its the people who play a sport that give life to it else the sport is nothing short of a bunch of constraints that are documented in some old book.
And regarding Sachin, himself stating that “He’s not greater than the game”, you guys fail to understand that this very own humility is what makes him greater than the game itself. Cricket must be proud to have a child called Sachin. It’s this special child that has made his parents so proud!

  24. laxman vernekar says:

    @Sandyman,
Its just not Sachin. No sportsman ever will say I am above the game. That much humility every sportsman has. Its only the fans who idolize the player feel that way.
Idolising is good only to the extent of playing the game with their idol as role models. And this all I am writing with due repects to the master, who I believe has mastered his batting to the hilt.

  25. Vaibhav Arora says:

@laxman vernekar : Dude , I have read your comments and I have figured out that you have difficulty in comprehending english . The sentence you are commenting at has a deeper meaning than what merely the words mean . I cant waste my time explaining that because if you have common sense you will get it . And you can reply what ever to my message I am not replying back ! Period . I have seen people like you making a mess of lot of forums by your stupid comments.

@all: Please stop convincing this laxman vernekar . Everybody here knows the greatness of sachin and “he has indeed made cricket popular” :) :)

And to the author : Great Article !!

  26. sandyman says:

@laxman i accept your point but what i meant to say was His humility is not only in His words but also in His heart(while many cricketers out here are “verbally” humble).
I recently came across a tabloid in the front page of a newspaper reading “CLT20 starts today with MI against the LIONS in the opener” with a photo of Sachin nearby it. What do you think made the editor choose Sachin’s picture instead of CLT20 logo or MI’s logo or the LION’s logo? the reason is obvious, isn’t it?
Had the game been greater than the Individual y was there a picture of an Individual to represent a whole bunch of people(of two different teams)?
And i’m sure more than 50% of the people who would have turned to the sports column wouldn’t have ended up being there had Sachin’s pic not been there. You want to deny this fact? I don’t think so.

  27. laxman vernekar says:

    @ whomsoever its concerned,
My commomn sense says I can admire a person. I cannot idolise a person fanatically. As far as my English is concerned I am sure its ok with me the fellowmen here. You need not start English classes here. And nowhere in my postings including other articles I have ever denied Sachin’s greatness and the popularity. Even the author with whom I am argueing is aware of this. Its only your poor understanding is thinking it the other way.

  28. laxman vernekar says:

    @Sandyman,
I agree to the fact that the name Sachin sells Cricket. And nobody can deny this. Thanx for agreeing my point.

  29. laxman vernekar says:

    @Ajith,
Sports like Badminton, Chess, Tennis are better played in individal capacities. I guess “The Sponsor Craze” has been started only of late since last few years. Otherwise yester year greats like Prakash Padukone, Gopi Chand, Vijay Amritraj etc would have definitely popularized their respective games to a much greater heights. So Saina is not an exception. We have world number 1 in V Anand. But sponsorship flows only to him and not to to the chess.
While Cricket, Soccer and Hockey are team Events. Soccer and Hockey would have had got their share but for sheer, poor mismanagement. For ex, when Hockey was at prime the rules got changed. The management didnt heed to this. The adaptability was clearly missing. World went for synthetic turfs where the speed of the ball was terrific. And it took years and years to bring Synthetic Turfs to India. By the time it came Hockey was an extinct game in India. So it was the MISMANAGEMENT was completely responsible and not the players.

Of late we have heard IHF didnt have money to pay their players. May be the same is the reason for West Indies decline in Cricket.
The sports has changed over from amaturism to professionalism. Money has become primary factor in chosing sports as a career. Money is flowing in Cricket more than any other game in India. So every parent wish their ward to be a cricketer. Once upon a time the soccer clubs like, Mohan Bagan, JCT, Mohammadans and Dempo were household names and at feverish pitch. If that was maintained by the soccer managers by searching for more money India too have strong Soccer league. But today even West Bengal and Goa too have turned to Cricket.

  30. @ Laxman

Gopichand, Vijay amritraj and prakash padukone were all good players but they never dominated the sport. Your take about Anand cannot be accepted, he popularized chess. There are many chess academies stared in his name. Lot of people took chess professionally which was just a time pass before Anand era. Fischer was hero and he was responsible for making chess a followed game around the world.. and so is anand. Anand is responsible for making chess popular in India.

Because people would want to emulate a Fischer or Anand, but no one will want to emulate a gopichand, vijay amritraj or prakash.. they are not legends of the game.

The mismanagement was responsible for the hockey’s demise in India. However even BCCI was reluctant to introduce T20s, but the moment India became world champions in T20 things got changed. BCCI went all out and created the world’s largest cricket league. BCCI hardly organised good test series, but the moment we became number one team of the world, they changed every long ODI series in to a Test + ODI series. The series against SA, and against Australia were not there in the FTP.

When money is there a sport will thrive despite mismanagement. And for money to come, in a sport needs stars and for a sport to become a national phenomenon then the sport need legends.

About Soccer managers searching for more money is not relevant.. No sport need to chase money, the sponsors will chase every game when there are stars.

  31. laxman vernekar says:

    1. During those days Amritraj was called as ABC(Amritraj-Bjorg-Conners) of World of Tennis. Padukone was All England Champion(It was the prime Badminton event that time. These were no way mean achievements. They were stars. They put India on World map of Tennis and Badminton. Along with Indonesia, Denmark and England India too was counted in the B’minton Circles. Amritraj inspired a lot of youngstres to take to tennis. UNfortunately those days sports was considered amateure’s game in India. The sponsor craze was not there at all.
2.Since decades BCCI is the only sports body in India which had worked towards developing the game. Look at the other sports body. The cupboards are empty. All money eaten by the permanent presidents of them. Only BCCI functions democratically. Hence is thriving with more transparency. Today these sports bodies are asking for alms from BCCI. Then why they didnt follow BCCI Model. This is the root cause. With proper infrastructure Stars would have been made out of these games too.
